Anna Kournikova spotted in wheelchair during Miami outing

Anna Kournikova, Enrique Iglesias, wheelchair

Former tennis star Anna Kournikova, wife of famous singer Enrique Iglesias, made a rare public appearance over the weekend when she was spotted out with her children and their friends at a shopping mall in Miami, Florida.

The former tennis star was in a wheelchair and wearing an orthopedic boot, which sparked concern among her fans. It seems she may have recently had surgery, although details are not yet clear.

Anna Kournikova’s husband, Enrique Iglesias, was not with her during this outing. Instead, the mom of three was being pushed by a friend while shopping at the Bal Harbour Mall.

Despite needing help to move around, Anna Kournikova appeared to be in good spirits. She laughed and chatted with her friends while spending time with her children, Lucy, seven, and Maria, four.

Anna and Enrique Iglesias also have a third child, Nicholas, who is a twin to Lucy, but he wasn’t seen in the photos.

It seems the group was celebrating a special occasion, as they were carrying a big pink balloon, which likely indicated that they were celebrating Maria’s upcoming birthday. Maria will turn five on January 30.

Anna Kournikova was dressed casually for the occasion in black sweatpants, with her hair pulled back into a messy bun, and wore sunglasses. In one of the photos, her bandaged finger was visible, adding to the concern about her condition.

Though Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias are both very private about their family life, the couple has been together since 2001, when they met while shooting the music video for Enrique Iglesias’ song, “Escape.”

In terms of their careers, Anna Kournikova retired from professional tennis back in 2003 after a series of injuries, including severe back pain that made even simple tasks like tying her shoes difficult.

In a 2020 interview, Anna Kournikova opened up about how tough it was to retire at such a young age. She said, “It was very difficult and scary as hell. I did everything from therapy to 10-hour walks on the beach to discover, and think, and try new things.”

After retiring, Anna turned her focus to being a hands-on mother, a role she clearly enjoys.

Meanwhile, Enrique Iglesias has continued his music career but has said that he won’t be releasing any more full albums, although he will still produce singles.

He also shared how difficult it is for him to be away from his kids for too long. “It’s difficult to leave them for two days or two weeks. It’s not easy,” he said.

Pakistan became 24th largest economy: Ishaq Dar

Ishaq Dar

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar on Tuesday said that despite past setbacks, Pakistan’s economy is on the right path to achieving long-term growth.

Adressing an event titled “Opportunities for Economic Diplomacy to Promote Pakistan’s Trade and Investment” organised by Pakistan Business Council, the DPM highlighted the critical turning point of 2013, when the country was grappling with extreme load shedding, rampant terrorism, and a deteriorating economy on the brink of default.

“Our political party secured a third term to serve the country, and we introduced our three Es manifesto—Economy, Extremism, and Electricity—successfully addressing these issues,” he said. The results, he said, were clear as within three years, Pakistan became the 24th largest economy, saw record-high foreign reserves, and reduced inflation to below double digits.

Ishaq Dar said after 2018, the country faced a regression, with its economy slipping to 47th place and inflation climbing to double digits. The year 2022 brought another crisis, with economic bodies predicting a potential default but Pakistan has the ability to turn things around, he said, adding, “I believe Pakistan has the potential to streamline its reserves and recover.”

He recalled a pivotal moment in 2023 when the business community was disheartened by Pakistan’s external debt, which had surged to $130 billion. Yet, despite the challenges, Dar highlighted Pakistan’s natural wealth, including vast mineral reserves and hydrocarbons, which he believed would propel the country to its rightful position in the global economy.

“We are a nuclear and missile power, yet we lack continuity,” Ishaq Dar said and pointed to how Pakistan’s stability is often derailed during periods of progress. He also praised the efforts of the then PDM government for averting a potential default, adding that the country has since regained its standing on the international stage, citing Pakistan’s re-election to the UN Security Council with an overwhelming 182 votes.

“Pakistan’s international diplomacy has seen a revival as well, with heads of state visiting the country and significant international cooperation in areas like education. Notably, the successful international conference on girls’ education, which saw the participation of 47 countries,” Ishaq Dar added.

The deputy prime minister also rejected misconceptions surrounding Pakistan’s economic viability, emphasizing that while the country faces a fiscal deficit in rupees, this can be managed. However, he acknowledged the critical need to address external debt, which remains a pressing challenge.

“The privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) is another major aspect of the government’s strategy,” Dar said and revealed that 24 SOEs have been identified for privatization, alongside three international airports, which will have their services privatized. He urged Pakistan’s corporate sector to take the lead in these initiatives, including the potential privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

“Pakistan’s business community has the capacity to manage large-scale transactions like the PIA takeover. We need Pakistani corporate groups to actively participate in the privatization of public enterprises,” Ishaq Dar said.

Women voting choices differed from men in 18pc communities during GE-2024

FAFEN report

ISLAMABAD: Women voters in 18 percent communities in the jurisdiction of male and female polling stations voted differently from their men counterparts in National Assembly constituencies during General Elections (GE) 2024, according to a report published by Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) released here on Sunday.

The report on Women Voting Choices compares the results of male and female polling stations in the same communities finds that in 82 percent of the communities, male and female voters’ choice of winner was aligned as they returned the same winner from their respective polling stations.

The report read that since election results of combined polling stations do not provide a gender-wise breakdown of how male and female voters’ vote, FAFEN’s assessment could only compare the results of male and female polling stations. Furthermore, it has limited its scope to male and female polling stations where men and women from the same electoral areas voted. The assessment includes 21,188 communities comprising 42,804 comparable male and female polling stations.

In 18 percent of the communities, male and female voters diverged in their choice of winner as they returned different winners from their respective polling stations. Compared to rural areas, communities in urban areas showed more divergent choices among male and female voters.

Among regions, Islamabad had the highest proportion (37%) of electoral communities with different winners in male and female polling stations. Balochistan had the second-highest proportion (32%) followed by Sindh (19%) and Punjab (18%), while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) had the lowest proportion (13%) of such electoral communities.

Of the 3,884 communities where women’s choice of winner for National Assembly seats was different, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won more support from women in 1,260 communities, followed by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) in 1,027 and Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) in 694 communities. Regional trends showed that while PTI performed well across the country in terms of women voters’ choice, PML-N remained strong in Punjab, and PPPP dominated in Sindh.

As per the report, in 37 NA constituencies, the largest proportion of voters in female polling stations did not vote for the winning candidates. In 226 NA constituencies, the largest proportion of voters in female polling stations voted for the constituency winner. In 166 of those NA constituencies, compared to voters in male polling stations, a larger proportion of voters in female polling stations polled for the winner.

The FAFEN report added that in seven constituencies – NA-43 Tank-cum-Dera Ismail Khan, NA-49 Attock-I, NA-55 Rawalpindi-IV, NA-87 Khushab-I, NA-94 Chiniot-II, NA-128 Lahore-XII and NA-163 Bahawalnagar-IV –, the lead at female polling stations determined the winner. For example, in NA-43 Tank-cum-Dera Ismail Khan, PTI narrowly won edging out Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUIF) by 555 votes. PTI-supported candidate garnered a lead of 1,430 votes at female polling stations alone, a margin that decisively affected the overall outcome.

Low prices force Punjab farmer to distribute 50 maund cauliflower for free

punjab, farmer cauliflower free, Low prices

NAROWAL: A farmer in Punjab was forced to distribute 50 maund of cauliflower free of cost due to the drastically low prices of vegetables in the market after a bumper crop, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Despite a bumper harvest, farmers in Punjab are struggling with severe financial distress as vegetable prices have plunged in markets across the province over the past week, leaving them unable to recover even the basic costs of cultivation.

Prices of staple vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, and tomatoes have plummeted to as low as Rs 2 to 10 per kg in wholesale markets. Middlemen are unwilling to offer farmers fair prices due to the low demand and increased supply, compelling many growers to take drastic measures.

In a rare case in Narowal, a farmer was left with no choice but to distribute his cauliflower crop in frustration as the market price was only Rs 2 per kg.

Mudasir, a disheartened farmer from Sadiq Abad, distributed 50 maund of cauliflower free of cost. He said that the price in the market is only Rs2 per kg while just the basic cost of cultivation was around Rs30 to 40 thousand.

Mudasir said it is better to distribute the crop free of cost rather than selling it at a loss. He demanded the government abolish taxes on fertilizers and electricity bills to help farmers like him who are struggling to make a living.

According to a report, the agriculture sector of Pakistan has missed an opportunity to benefit from the bumper crops leaving farmers to bear the brunt of the low prices.
